Ageing in the Digital Age | Fuel PR

Are you a devoted fan of electronic gadgets that you can’t imagine a day without using? Well it turns out that not only is over use of electronic devices harmful to your eyes, but it can accelerate the skin ageing process, studies have now revealed.

If you are currently sitting in front of your computer or phone screen then you may already have cause for concern. According to The Telegraph, dermatologists taking part in the annual Facial Aesthetic Conference and Exhibition warned that the high energy visible (HEV) light emitted from phone and computer screens can cause damage to the skin and ultimately lead to our skin aging quicker. So what does that mean for our age conscious generation?

There are three main factors that lead to skin damage; pollution, sun damage and HEV light. While most people vigilantly use anti-ageing and SPF based skincare, a lot of people are unaware of what HEV is and the sort of damage to your skin it may cause.

HEV, known as the ‘blue light’, is a high-frequency light which has a very short wavelength and produces a higher amount of energy. Studies suggest that exposure to the blue end of the light spectrum could cause serious age-related macular degeneration and are as dangerous, if not more, than sun damage. According to skin experts, “HEV light penetrates more deeply than UV light and it has a negative impact on the DNA within the cells, accelerating skin aging”. Therefore every time you sit down with a smartphone or tablet in your hand you are being exposed to those harmful rays.

The only question now is how we can prevent premature skin ageing living in such a digital age where we are compelled to use electronic devices daily? The only way we can help to counteract HEV damage is to use quality broad-spectrum skincare rich in antioxidants, and quite frankly limit the time we spend on the digital devices.
